Have you been wondering how to boost the flavour of your favourite dishes naturally? If the answer is yes, follow me and I'll show you how.
There are several main steps in cooking. Once you've decided what ingredients you are going to use, a picture of something superb and delicious starts to emerge in your head. But, to make this food really wonderful, you need proper seasoning.
Nowadays, it's very easy to add an extra punch of flavour to almost any dish. A whole array of condiments, spices and seasonings can be found in shop aisles; plus, they are easy to use, cheap and always handy.
Unfortunately, they are also packed with things most of us don't know anything about. Preservatives, flavourings and glucose syrup are just a few examples of mysterious additives that can be found on labels with the sodium glutamate being the worst perpatrator.
For this reason, I stopped buying any spices that contain more than just salt and herbs. But, that also meant I had to search for healthier alternatives. This herb salt is one my greatest discoveries - you can add it to soups, sauces, stews, etc.
This is a homemade version but if I happen to find good quality herb salt in store, I'm always happy to add it to my basket.
Ingredients:
- 5 tablespoons sea salt
- 5 tablespoons golden linseed (flaxseed)
- 5 tablespoons black cumin seeds
- 2 tablespoon caraway seeds
- 2 tablespoons dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried leaf of celeriac
Preparation:
- Put the sea salt, linseed, black cumin seeds and carawy in a skillet or frying pan and bring to the heat.
- Roast for a couple of minutes stirring frequently, turn off the heat and let it cool.
- Grind the mixture in a mill. Grind the parsley and the celeriac leaf.
- Mix all the ingredients together and bring to the heat again. Roast until brown.
- Store in a glass jar and use whenever needed.
You can try adding other herbs of your choice, e.g. marjoram, basil, oregano, thyme, etc.
