Nettle has been renowned for its medicinal properties for centuries and it has a great reputation as a hair reviver and scalp conditioner. It prevents dandruff and hair loss.
So, I've decided to capture the essence of this plant in a tincture. Tinctures are liquid extracts made from alcohol and herbs. They usually have a stronger and much immediate effect than teas or infusions. The percentage of the alcohol I've used is 90% (190 proof grain alcohol) ; however, you can use 40%-50% (80-90 proof vodka) as well. Just remember, the stronger the alcohol, the stronger the tincture, so you may wish to dilute it with water.
Most of the tinctures are taken orally in form of droplets; however, this tincture has been made for external use.
Not only does it strengthen the hair and improve its condition, but when used externally, it may relieve the symptoms of such skin conditions as acne, eczema, rash or warts.

Ingredients:
- fresh nettle
- alcohol
- a 500 ml glass jar
Preparation:
- Wash the young nettle leaves and finely chop or grind them to release the juice. I used the leftover nettle from nettle honey (click here) preparation.
- Fill jar 3/4 to 4/5 with herb.
- Pour over the alcohol; fill to the brim. Ensure the nettle can move freely when you shake the jar.
- Store in a cool, dry and dark place for 6-8 weeks.
- Shake the jar from time to time and ensure the nettle is fully submerged in the alcohol.
- When the mixture has extracted, use a clean muslin cloth and strain it well until you squeeze all those precious drops out.
- Bottle the tincture or store in a jar. Keep in a cool, dry and dark place.
Massage the tincture into the scalp in the evening and leave overnight. Wash your hair on the next day. Use 2-3 times a week.
